I've always wondered.... Is it possible to upgrade the rear travel of a bike from lets say 8inches to 9inches or does it f**k up everything?

depends on the year of the bighit also, Avalanche has info on 2 different linkages.http://www.avalanchedownhillracing.com/beaudry.html
this is suposedly the better of the 2 also try BETD in England they make seat stays that let you run a 26" rear wheel, thru axel and 9" of travel

SOme things to consider. Even if the bike can be modified to get more travel it often:
Raises the BB
Steepens the steering angle
Puts undo stress on bikes not designed for the extra travel
Sometimes changes the leverage ratio negatively
I came from the days of converted XC FS rigs for DH bikes.....it messes with things.
Is their a greater benefit to the extra 1" of travel over the cost of doing it? I have yet to see it. It costs you $$$ it costs you geometry and it costs you reliability.
