My new race tire???

Put some Maxxis Flyweights on my Superlight today.Ran 42 pounds of pressure.Man,very very low resistance.Although they are very flimsy when you are mounting them thet seemed fine on the trail.It was muddy in places today and traction didn't seem to be an issue.Does anybody have any extended experience on these tires?If reliabilty/flats aren't a big issue,I have found my race tire for this season :thumb:

That generation of Maxxis designs is really prone to pinch flatting. Steve Larsen was flatting every race in 2000 because of his love for the Minataur and flyweight.
If you are going to run them, run them with Stan's or be prepared to flat, alot.

actually i've run the Minataur for several months with pretty low pressure and havent pinch flatted once. pretty good build to them. also i run mimo's and TT's not problems there either.
i did just pick up some fast fred and their pretty flimsy.
i dont know what a fly weight is though i need to do some research.

I'm looking at running either Kenda Karmas or Kharismas on my XC bike this year. Anyone have a opinion about one, the other, or both?

I raced on the Kharismas last year. I had the ones with the L3 tread compound. They work really on hardpack and dry rocks, but they get wicked it the wet. They pack in mud and slide on anything wet. Just my $.02

Tioga has a couple of really good tires this year. I think the Red Phoenix is their "XC Race" tire. 1.95" wide, really light, really cool. They have an even lighter tire, made of some sort of "foam rubber," that's supposed to hook up really well, be SUPER light, but it's like a 1-2 race tire only.
I have a set of the WTB "ExiWolf" (used to be the "EpicWolf") and they're great. 1.95" wide, super light, hook up great (except in super-dry conditions), hard to do better...
Just my opinions...

Um, ok. I personally loathe those stupid German magazines and their tests. It just really annoys me for some reason.
I prefer actual personal experience, and that where I'm coming from. I like Tioga tires, I have, and would again, run them on my XC bike.
Just personal preference, everyone's riding style is different, so tires will work differently for different people...

oh yeah, like a test of rolling resitance and durability on a smooth steel drum mounted to a dyno is in ANY way applicable to offroad perfromance or durability. Shock horror!

I have a pair that came stock on my bike. They're really light, do very well in mud, but they feel slower than your everyday 1.9 race tire. They also seem to get somewhat squirrely in hardpack and pavement, not sure why. Lots of people have bitched about them wearing out after a race or two, but I think the OEM ones my bike has have a harder rubber compound, because so far so good. I'll probably get some Twisters or Pythons when I get some $$$, however.
