View Full Version : Dont Get Screwed By This Guy

Recently I did a trade with DHGH. I traded my 03 Santa Cruz Bullit and Arrow rear rim laced to an XT hub for his Cortina DHE-8 with rear Mavic 321 rim laced to a Ringle hub. We went through shops to make sure there was no scams. Making sure that the frames got boxed up all nice and that the frames were infact being shiped out. Everything went well untill today. I got the frame on Monday the 31st of January and today (wednsday the 2nd of Feb.) I took it into my LBS (Go-Ride.com's store) to get it built up. They were looking over it and found a large crack in the weld under the head tube, one on the weld of the gusset on the top tube, and one in the swing arm. I called him up and asked him if he would like to either A. Re-Trade bikes (he complained of my bike being in poor condition aswell so i figured he wouldnt have a problem) or B. Pay to have the bike sent back to Cortina at the price of about $650 USD to get the swing arm repaired and the front end completly replaced. He denied both options and said "thats too bad, its the way buying used equipment goes" I am 100% aware of the risks taken when buying/trading over the internet but he was so adament about getting everything perfect so no one is screwed over in the end. I figured he'd try to be helpful. Boy was I wrong. Anyway he told me that he had Cortina go over the frame and service it. He also said the frame had'nt been ridden since it got serviced. The frames pivots were dirty and they looked like they hadnt been touched by Cortina in a very long time. My LBS called Cortina Cycles and talked to them and they said they knew who the guy was. They said that they went over the frame..... over a year ago. Im really upset about this whole thing because I was really excited to get my new bike and start riding it. Ive wanted a Cortina for a long time and when i got one it was broken. Please if you buy used equipment dont buy it from him. He is selling a fork in the buy and sell. Dont get screwed like i did. I'd hate to see it happen to an other Monkey.
Here are some links to him.

He's been trying to swap that frame FOREVER it seems like. Now I know why he was so insessent(sp?) on getting rid of it. That really sucks that you got swindled there. What do you think you're going to do about the frame? Get it replaced or what?

i dunno. i can send it back to Cortina and get the front end replaced and the swing arm "fixed" altho that makes me nervous cuz a repair cant b as strong. I could also just get a new bike and get hit hard with debt. but hey, atleast i'd have something to ride this year.... its gonna seriously **** up my race season tho.

That's a bummer dude. :( Does Cortina have a crash replacement thing so that you could just get new front and rear ends?

If he isn't willing to reverse your trade, do you have a statement from Cortina in writing or from someone reputable who might speak on your behalf? I'm certainly not a lawyer, but if they did actually tell him about it a year ago, and he made this so-called deal knowing that, you might have a case of fraud on your hands.

i could maybe get Adrienne from Cortina to put it in writing. The shop he shiped it from didnt tell me anything.

This is total bologna. If he knew it was cracked and didn't tell you about it then he is a total SOB.
I know in the past the Cortina's have repaired many cracked bikes with gussets and sent them out for re heat-treating. I know lot's of guys with repaired DH-8's that are holding up very well. I wonder why they didn't offer that to you? What is DHGH's real name, it is highly possible I know him since I lived in SB for four years and managed the local Cortina dealer.
He should trade you back and call it even, but since he's unwilling to do that it makes me want to bombard him with negative PM's/posts etc until he realizes that you can't do this to someone in such a small community like the bike industry. Maybe Ben can give us some insight. I would really like to hear DHGH's side of the story as well.
Either way this stinks :dead:
Look at the dude's name on yahoo - california_blond_devil
Anyone with a name like that can't be trusted.

EDIT: He WAS in dexters post earlier today. It appears his picture is no longer in that thread.... isn't that interesting. It had a picture of this guy riding some of that single track with no helmet on, and dexter replied with a rolls eye smiley.

I hate stuff like this. Makes me afraid to do any buying over the internet. You'd think people would be decent. Obviously Dexterq20 knows this guy well since he went riding with him today. Dexter has always seemed like a nice guy, but editing DHGH out of the picture is kinda shady. I saw DHGH's buy and sell thread, too, and thought it was an awesome bike. I wish you the best of luck korked.
Laaaame.
I have a good idea. Have mack send some PMs to him until he stops being a tool and returns it. I would have that bike back yesterday.

Ok people, check it out: I go to school with Gordon (DHGH). I rode with Gordon today. I posted pictures of Gordon and me riding. This thread showed up. Gordon requested that I delete the picture of him in my thread. That's why his pic disappeared.
Right now I am the victim of a bad case of guilt by association coupled with some bad timing. My only connection to this situation is that I know Gordon. I had nothing to do with the bike trade that took place.
I have talked with Gordon already, and there is nothing I can do to make him give the bike back. Some of you are being very cool right now, and I appreciate that, but everyone else just needs to take a step back and realize that I'm not involved in this at all, and that there's nothing I can do (besides stealing from Gordon) to get that bike back.
I hate to not be pro-active in this situation, but it's really not my place to take a stand because I was not involved.

This is my first post here and I really just registered to try and help you out a little inlight of you getting screwed over so bad. Did you guys write up any terms of condition/sale? If you did I'd say that's the best way to go about getting things fixed. If you didn't....well you're pretty much screwed and I'd take it as a lesson for future dealings, that's about the best you could hope for at this point unfortunately.
And while I'm on my soap box, if I were the rest of you I'd be careful about posting stuff about stealing his bike or beating him with a chain. Documentation of threats of violence/theft never looks good in a court room if you catch my drift.

He tried to trade with me as well. Thats severely gay, its true that if you bought the bike and it broke in a month that would just be tough luck, but if he sold it to you broken then he is certianly responsible. Still though, a beat up bullet frame plus 800 bucks is a damn good deal for a brand new cortina. Did you explain what happened to the guys at cortina? If you tell them they might have pity and help you out a little more, although I would bet that 800 is breaking even for them already. Good luck man.

He's only liable though if he said the bike was perfect (that's why I mentioned the terms of condition before). If he didn't and you're buying a used bike, well that's why you should be skeptical of stuff on the internet. I don't condone with the asshat did, but if he's been trying to sell off that frame for a while you probably should have assumed there was a reason. Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there like that, that's why I don't ever buy something off a website. It's a shame people ruin good things like this.

The guys at Cortina are good people, $800 is not a lot of $ for a new DH frame, I'd go for it. As far as that DH whatever his name is, karma will catch up with him and most likely it will be on a Bullit.

The Cortina's run a tight operation and I'm sure that their quote would cover only their actual cost and nothing more.
Even with a lot of legal proof settling a matter like this is typically more expensive and time consuming than it's worth. This kid really needs to step up here and take his broken bike back, pay the Cortina's $800 to fix it and then sell it for whatever he can get and start over. If for no other reason than because he will never be able to show his face around any of us again. I can easily make a few calls and get this guy black listed at every shop in SB and then some. He really needs to come in this thread and tell his side of the story but something tells me he knows he wrong and will just keep the bike and disappear for a while.
I'm not condoning anybody jacking the bullit back and then a Cortina magically showing up on homeboys doorstep but that would be a nice outcome. ;)
I can easily make a few calls and get this guy black listed at every shop in SB and then some.
I'd highly suggest this if nothing is resolved within the next week...it would put increasing pressure on him to make it right. I've talked to him on AIM. Doesn't sound like the brightest crayon in the box.

im thinking that if it doesnt go down quickly and cleanly... vigilante justice at least makes it feel better.
but thats just the rant. seriously, am i hearing that no one knows this kid well enough to tell him to at LEAST trade it back?
all im saying is.. it would be wise for him to step down and hand it back over.. im pretty sure a tight cycling community can make life a royal pain for this kid, hearing about blacklisting him from shops, etc.

Dude... that sucks hardcore. I'm really sorry to hear about what happened.
Honestly, if I was you... I'd just buy the new frame from Cortina. Since they're willing to cut you one helluva deal, you're getting a brand new frame for $800.00. That's insane cheap considering what the frame is like.
I'd mail your cracked frame back to Cortina, and then have them ship you a new one. For $800, you can't go wrong.
Otherwise, good luck with the ass-kicking. I'd like to see an internet bitch-fight turned real life. Can we say... "Round 1....... FIGHT"

I think the only real way to work it out is to trade back. You shouldn't be stuck paying more money so you get a working frame. He knew it was cracked when he traded/sold to you. IMO anything less than him giving you back your frame and offering to pay for shipping on both frames is unacceptable.
Gordon, if you are reading this, please try to understand that you really are in the wrong here. At least do it so that you can have a clear consience. Do the right thing and give back the frame.

Yeah. Tell him to ship your Bullitt back, and then and only then you'll ship back the Cortina. Preferably on his dime, but if dropping $40-$50 is all it takes to get your Bullitt back, that's certainly better than where you are now. Like the others have said, f-that offer he recently made you. How didn't his bike shop see the cracks when they were shippping out the bike for him. They should be somewhat responsible for the crappy deal too.
Have you talked to the bike shop that sent it to you? His friends that ride with this kid should get the balls and send you back the frame for you. I would be pissed if one of my buddies did that. Screw trades man it isn't worth it. Oh' if he does send it back to you via the same bike shop, make sure you have them check out your frame before you send his back. Don't know what kind of s*** head this kid is. File a report with the police. This kid is in some serious trouble.

I don't consider you an asshole. I just think that comment was rather uncalled for, and somewhat characteristic of an asshole.
Now honestly, if you were in my position, what would you do? Seriously, answer that. Everybody keeps saying "Do something! Do something!"... but what? From your original post, it didn't sound like you bothered to say a damn word to him about it. If you say you told him he should trade back, that's about all any of us can expect from you. Really if you do the math he's the one thats getting screwed... Youre paying 800 for a brand new DHE frame (2200 off of goride.com) plus a beat up bullet frame probabaly worth no more than 400 or 500. Your basically getting a sweet new frame at roughly half price, which is usually about what a pro deal is. I say get the new frame, built it sweet, and rub it in his face at the races while he putzes around on a bullet. None of this excuses him, its just means hes not only sketchy but also a moron.

I might be a little late with these comments but anyone ever check out all those threads about people getting sued or arrested for silly things. If Dexter did anything like steal the bike back or beat this douche nozzle up he could find himself in serious trouble. Being the nice guy is admirable. But you are going to end up short in the end. I too am one of the type that doesn’t like to confront the tough situations. But you need to decide if this guy being a criminal and scamming YOU is worth not standing up for yourself. If it's worth it, stop posting and tell everyone the situation is taken care of. But if you want this to be right, do what you must do. File the report. Let him know you did. Make a statement that you don't want people to steal or beat on your behalf. Keep it clean and hope you come out on the other side with a bike.
Not all situations are as easy as a fair trade. I don't want to be the one to stand up for the thief in SB but we still have only herd one side.
A couple months ago i traded Vitox a cracked M1 (i didn't know it was) for a fork. When he got the frame he found a 3mm crack on the underside of the chainstay. I had no idea it was there. The situation was dealt with. we made the trade and we both ended up with what we wanted. if Vitox was not such a cool guy, i would have been in a very bad situation. He and I both are problem solvers so it worked out. Gordon might not be.
What if Vitox got on here and told everyone about the cracked, beat to hell bike i shipped to him? he might tell you that the ISCG was broken off and it smelled like crap and had ugly stickers on it. But maybe he would not mention any of the efforts took on both side to make sure no one was unsatisfied with the deal. Vitox is a standup guy and handled the situation very well. i would like to think i did too.
I'm lucky to have dealt with him. So who is this dude in SLC?
SLC guy. Please do what is in your best interest. I do not think you have let everyone here believe a false story. But you need to decide what is going to happen to this situation. For my piece of advice i say, get your bike back or the 800 $ plus shipping to fix the frame. If neither are met, talk to the cops tomorrow. don't wait until next week for resolution. right now this guy thinks you are a puss and will roll over. maybe a bunch of e-friends are talking of hunting the dude down, but that's not a good solution. Sorry you are in this deal; sorry you could not have dealt with someone like Vitox.
I don't think that dexterq20 has to do much about this. the person to take action can not know gordon personaly, think about it, if dex went and took the frame from gordon he would have an enemy for life, and on the other hand if the ITO stole the frame back and beat up gordon it wouldn't effect him because gordon dosn't know where the ito lives

Tis good to know that we are dealing with sensible people here....yar!
To clarify it, I don't plan on beating anyone up or stealing the bike, I'm hoping for a reasonable resolution. I do think Taylor is getting the short end of the stick here and needs to stand up for himself and I'm sure he will.
Oh, Taylor, I'll cancel that order of anthrax then? Or is there someone else to send it to? ;)
Anyway, with all this publicity I don't think Gordon will be selling anything online for a while.
66, sounds like you got lucky. I had a similar thing happen where I bought a bike from a kid and it had a cracked swingarm. He ended up taking it back and I got my money back. It's too bad not everyone is as intelligent/nice as the people we've dealt with.
The Ito
I'd say go for the whole 800 bucks here. The original terms of the deal were that you were getting a fully functional Cortina. He sent you a broken one. Now that he's been "found out", he's trying to change the original terms of the deal (after it has been done). He should either give you the full 800 to fix it and make it rideable, or he should give you the Bullit back. Doesn't matter how much the Bullit's worth, he made the original deal.
Besides, don't you think that extra mystical 300 dollars should be his penance for being a bastard by sending a cracked frame in the first place?

I hate to say it, but nice guys finish last and there is no honor among thieves. This was a premeditated swindle propagated over a lengthy period of time. That anklegripper is not going to just give back his ill-gotten gains! He tried for a long time to pull of the scam and now he has a sucker right where he wants him. He associates freely with people who should ostracize him unless they are either complicit or apathetic to his dishonesty. Additionally, he still sees himself in an elevated position of bargaining power because HE has what he wants and feels that all this will ultimately blow over...which it will unless his victim stops acting like one. If a guy steals your wallet with $500 cash in it, why in the hell would you consider accepting back $250? Because it's better than nothing??? Time to untuck and fight back- legally if you are rational or otherwise if you're a hothead like me.

I am sorry you got screwed korked7. I know I would be so po'd I couldn't see straight if I was in your situation.

Sorry one more thing. I talked to Cortina today. My origional estimate of 800 bucks for the whole thing was correct. But they said that they could possibly fix the crack in the swing arm and that'd hold me over for a year or two. The fix would be around $600-$650. Not too bad considering that I might be having $500 thrown my way. Anyway, I'll keep ya posted on any developments in the saga. Have a good day!

Maybe someone could remind DGHG of what happens to young white boys from the suburbs when they end up in prison. Mail fraud = Hugeass fine, and when you can't pay that fine for whatever reason they send you to a camp. If those camps are full you go on tour to all the county jails in your district. Those county jails are a very bad place to be. Very bad place to be.....

Ito, let's not do anything until or unless we are asked specifically. I know he appreciates the help but we lose leverage if we start acting on these things. If we blacklist him then he'll really have nothing to lose so he'll just keep the bike anyway.
It's nice to know that we can affect him seriously though if he decides not not do the right thing.
Edited on request.

I hate to see someone like DHGH to get ahead, but in light of everything that's gone on I'd be happy he's offering anything now judging by the type of guy he sounds like. It'd probably be a good idea just to take it and end all this headache now, you have to consider what that's worth to you as well. He'll get his eventually no matter what you do.

Dude you need to take your thread title to heart. If you don't stand up now, you could end up being walked all over for the rest of your life, just like he is walking all over you now. There should be no compromises on your part.

I don't think he's beholden to his parents...he's a Freshman at UCSB (as far as I know).
This guy's a ****head, I've read somethings he's said about this. He feels no remorse over this at all, or sympathy for Taylor. He's a bastard, plain and simple, and should be treated as such. This was premeditated fraud, and he suckered Taylor into it on purpose. No compromise. Cash or the frame, anything less and you'll forever be a pussy in my book, you PC bitch ;)

Gordon and I have finally come to an agreement. I will be getting 500 dollars from him. I only ask that no one does anything stupid. This would intail getting him black listed from any shops. ITO, i know you're itchin to do it but im gonna have to ask you not to. This also goes further. No stealing the bike back from him. I will be sending him the recipt from when i bought the bike so it'll b his 100% no questions asked. Also, no beating him up. I know alot of you are pissed about this but thats not the best way to solve this anyway. And those of you saying I should press charges... i cant. There is no documentation of the trade actually being made (e-mails, instant messanges, phone conversations, ect). None of the evidence I have would have held up anyway. Also it would have turned out more expensive and uglier than it has already been. Thanks to everyone who's made suggestions (as far fetched as some of them were). Im learned a really good lession about documentation, and internet sales/trading. I think its safe to say that trading isnt the best idea. Thanks alot guys and happy posting. see ya around

Oral agreements are usually just fine although they have a time limit of a year or two. You have the reciept for the bike to prove that it was yours in the first place. You also have the bike shop as a witness that the bikes were traded. Just an fyi if he balks on ya'lls agreement.
I wouldn't send him the reciept until you have the money, and if it is any kind of check, it clears your bank.

Korked, I feel terrible about you getting scammed and all. But seriously dude, are you some kind of uber-calm buddist or something. If somebody lit your dog on fire, would you just smile and mention how nicely he glowed?
The guy that ripped you off is a total dick. After that funds show, I would report his ass for mailfraud, and teach him a lesson. Hes getting off relatively easy considering what he did, and you're letting it happen. It was premeditated mail fraud, and you don't care. Stand up and teach the little bastard a lesson.
And You Dexqr20, you're just a dick. One of the reasons I like this sport is the people. I've met a ton of people from biking like no other. Theres a comraderie and, well a bond I guess that I've never experienced with any other sport i've been in. One of the unspoken rules is to help a bro out. You see a guy with a flat, offer help. Guy hurt? Help him out. Cheer for other racers. Basically, take care of your own and nurture the best part of the sport. Yet here you are with personal access to a guy thats deliberaly screwed over another rider, and you do less then nothing. Way to go dude, way to go. Remind me to shurg when you don't get paid for something sent to my neck of the woods and I know the jerk who did it. After all, its "not my problem."
Teach that little asshole a lesson, and get more then what you deserve.

That little loophole was fixed in 1994:
The language of the mail fraud statute remained unchanged for 100 years. It wasn’t until 1994 that Congress expanded and enhanced the statute as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, inserting new language into Section 1341 that reads “or deposits or causes to be deposited any matter or thing whatever to be sent or delivered by any private or commercial interstate carrier.” Con artists who try to circumvent the mail by using private interstate couriers are no longer exempt from the law, as the 1994 Crime Bill amended the mail fraud statute to include them. The mail fraud statute can now be used for items sent through the U.S. Mail, as well as FedEx, UPS or other interstate carriers and couriers.
