a guy i work with at my biek shop is gonna pick me up an old singlespeed frame with track spacing, so im planning to build up a fixie for xc this year.... but i might just go ss, but those level hubs look soooo money

I don't know if I could hang on a fixie. Something about having to pedal at all times would literally throw me. :)
I tried it on a roadie for a couple weeks, it was definitely a learning experience... No way would I try it for MTB.
I don't remember which year (it might have been multiple years) Team Hugh Jass doing the 24 hours of Canaan on a fixie. They also wore the same pair of shorts.

Been riding mine in the snow. Traction action baby, there's nothing like it! Big logs are crap shoot though, no pedal setup...

It's a blast. Give it a go, especially if it's muddy or snowy where you are.
