gravity plus,

You either have to attach them one at a time, or upload them all to a website, then link to them. Linking to them while they're on your hard drive doesn't work. Side note: if you grabbed them from Pinkbike in the first place, you should just link to them on PB instead of uploading them again.

I'm absolutely positive this is not what you're in the market for... But it *IS* a quite burly hardtail.

9lb steel frame.
47.5lbs complete.
Gazzy 26x3.0 front and rear.
Stratos S8 5" travel(thanks R!).

I think of it as my pedal powered monster truck.

That orange Imperial isn't officially *mine*. The p.3 is laying on the floor right now but other than the fork and wheel (which is on orange Imp) it's ready to go.

If you "borrow" or "test" the Imp for just a little while longer won't you be able to claim it as your own under Squatter's Rights? :) Give it a shot!

nope. one of the guys at sinister I think was riding a rebadged spooky but these are actually their own design. My friend machines the chainstay and seat stay yokes for them. They are very nice bikes. look really beefy, they just look like alot out there becuz they got easton tubing and really, if you use the traditional double diamond design, how different can you make it?

Looks alot better than the Arrow with the Shiver, gotta say I was very skeptical of the super T on the orange imperial, but it was s33k.... every time I sit on that bike it hurts my ass, cause I sit on it thinking it has rear travel.... The geometry is TITS (0)(0)

i guess anything is possible! Seriously though, if someone breaks the thing, it will be a miracle if they don't have to go to the hospital for their own injuries. Profile cranks sould shear well before the frame breaks, so theres a gauge for ya!

Generally any good aluminum bike will have a replaceable derailleur hanger. Steel frames don’t usually get replaceable hangers because if they get bent out of shape, you can usually just whack them back into place. Steel is nice that way. When aluminum gets tweaked you can’t depend on it any longer, hence the replaceable hanger.

On a completely different notes, guess what everyone! Frank The Welder has decided to offer stainless steel dropouts for his DNA frame :)

cool, sort of like the stainless steel derailler hanger on the Imperials. A whole SS dropout isnt going to be a cheap option i bet!

Man, you have GOT to love stainless steel. This shop I used to work at here in Seattle used to make complete stainless steel frames. Man, where they pretty. A little whippy for my taste (pretty small gauge tubes and a very conventional design not well suited to my gorilla ass), but a good feel. The frames where absolutely gorgeous though, they’d polish them, then mask and bead blast them. It would give a great frosted look to the polished stainless tubes. I heard machining the BB and headtube was a bitch on tools though.

This bike hasn't been photographed much standing still, but there are some good dirtjump pics of it. Actually a couple were on the board today.

Chainstays are set at 15.7 in this pic, has a Z1 MCR, and 2.3 Gazzy freeride tires (which measure bigger actually, the tires are pretty nice). This frame also rocks the Evil guide, Profiles, Stealth hubs, SRAM drivetrain, and FSA skypilot. Titec post, Funn seat, and prototype Evil Stem on board too.

That's amazing DW....the angles/numbers look right on for DH. And huge tires to boot! Although I'd never do that to a hardtail, it still earns big bonus points for the option. Niiiice.

John P.
02-25-2002, 09:02 AM
Yeah, set up like that (huge tires, huge fork), it's not a great trail bike (especially for 6'4" Tom!), but it would rock on a DH course. Tom was launching the thing off quite a few good sized drops, landing front wheel first a majority of the time (he *claims* that was on purpose) and said it felt great. We got quite a few positive comments in the parking lot, too, and that's always nice.

BTW, thanks to Narlus and the gang for hooking us up on that ride.

DHJUNKIE,
your bor's not gonna be able to use lx cranks on the tankass. Your gonna either need profiles or isis. The tankass uses a 100mm bb and the only people that make a bb that will work is profile or racface. Raceface made it for the tomac's and canfield's for an alternative to profile. Also to use profiles you have to get the reaaaaaallly long axle, that measures like 7 inches. I know this because my friend got a tankass and he talked to bill, and said anyone who ever bought a tankass has used profiles, but said a raceface would work.

Thanks Alex. Hey, where's your helmet?!.... just teasing man. I like the black color...ALOT!

I really like all the options as far as fork, wheelbase, and tire size goes. Crazy to get all those options out of a one size fits all frame like that. Are you guys (Evil) going to wait until the release date before posting detail shots. In particular, I'm not a fan of horizontal dropouts (except for the obvious wheelbase adjustments) because of disc wheel removal, disc alignment, and wheel sliding/twisting in the dropouts problems. Can you show us what the dropouts look like or are they patent-pending as well? Best I've seen so far are some so-so shots from the drive side. I can see something like a chain tug to keep the axle in place, that's very good. I'd really like to see how Dave designed his disc mounts too. If you can't, you can't, and I'll just wait for some owner to take pics. I understand.

I've only had the Cortina rolling for a short while and I'm so tempted. Thank God the Imp won't be out for awhile. A burly twin toptube hardtail would look perfect next to the Turner!

This pic kinda shows the dropouts. Looks similar to the 24 dropouts, kinda, I know Evil probably has some cool engineering in the tensioners though.

Yeah, I've already seen all those. Thanks Tucker. I'm more interested in the disc mount. With the amount of wheelbase adjustability (1.5") I'd assume it slides with the sliding dropouts. I also want to see that it positions the caliper on top or better yet in front of the highest point on the disc rotor. If you've seen Dave Mowry try to take the wheel off his Balfa Minuteman you'll know what I'm referring to. He has to unbolt his caliper to remove his wheel. Not a huge problem, but still a pain in the a$$ nonetheless.

mtbtuc8700
02-26-2002, 12:22 AM
Yes, I know Dave's wheel and disc are a pain, and that is the fitst thing that comes to mind when I think about horizontal dropouts. That is what turns me away from the horizontal dropouts.
I get what you are saying about there disc mounting though, just have to wait and see a closer pic.

You can kinda see the disc mount is part of the tensioner in the pic of the 24" and 26" set up by the car. Another cool note is the der. hanger is also part of the tensioner.

Yep, I've had that frame since '98 - raced XC at Mt Snow on it... ouch... I have a I.F. for xc now (steel:good). The Chameleon is holding up well for me with dirtjumping and general DH abuse. I really like how it handles and seems made for a 4" travel Marzocchi. So far my biggest drop on it has been about 6-7 feet.

Btw, I asked FTW about steel frames and he'll make one if you want. Probably with the DNA-style drops outs if you ask for them and are willing to pay. Frank is a cool guy (I've met him at P-kill many times) and one of his steel frames may be my next HT after the Chameleon finally gives in...

How are you gonna rebuild that Foes Weasel?

Cuz i have one of those (foes weasel 2 -97 i think) and i screwed the derailleur hanger, thereby killing the whole swingarm. Rightnow i kinda fixed it by sawing off the hanger, drilling and screwing on a standard dereilleur hanger i bought in the local bikestore heh. It works fine but there isnt realy any future in the bike cuz it has no disc brake mount, the Fox Rx is probably dead.

Do you know if its possible to get a new swingarm for it? (with a disc mount heh). And what shock should i get to replace the fox rx? Is this frame eaven worth to waste my money on? I dont have much experiance of other full suspension bikes so i dunno how it rides, i mostly ride Urban with some occational freeride.

Any help would be very apriciated.

I plan to rebuild it as a XC/mild-FR bike with a 4" travel fork.

Replacement swingarms are available directly from Foes. I'm not sure how much, though. New swingarms come with disc tabs. I've also heard of guys welding and bolting custom tabs on with no ill effects, but it depends on how well it's done.

I have a Fox RX as well and for this frame it works fine. Typically to get it rebuilt, you need to send it back to Fox, which may or may not be an option for you. It may be possible for you to go to a World Cup race and have it rebuilt by6 them there - e-mail them and ask. Flat o nthis board also rebuilds Fox shock. You can find him in the "members" and e-mail or PM him. He's in Canada.

good luck and welcome to the :monkey: ! :)

So on dropouts for the Imperial.

You guys are totally right, Horizontal dropouts can be a total pain in the ARSE!! Like Tucker said, the Imperial Alpha Prototypes used a horizontal dropout with a 12mm thru axle. The caliper mount and stainless steel derailler hanger float with the axle. Its pretty good, but thru axles in horizontal drops are just not too fun to deal with on the trail.

The Imperial Beta prototype uses a standard QR (no thru axle), and an adjustable chainstay length as well. No pics are available yet.

I am not ready to divulge the nature of the new design yet, but as Bulldog speculated, it is pending patent.

As soon as we are ready to release the production frame, (they will be shipping for May) we will be showing pics and detailed explaination on how the new system works, and what it does.

this thread should be a sticky!! its great!

I vaguely remember something around $700 or so... maybe $800 - just a ball-park figure I remember him mentioning, don't hold me to it. Custom hand-made steel hardtails don't come cheap.

I toyed with having I.F. build a slalom frame for me - basically exactly what you wrote: a steel chameleon, but the price would likely be around $1500... a bit too much for a beat-on bike, IMO.

My I.F. is a nice, basic black with the std metal flake clear-coat and pimpin' gold King hubs. :D

How'd you get it to weigh 45 lbs? I've got a Monster-T, Profile DJ cranks, 24" DW w/ 3-inch Kujos and it still only weighs 42 lbs. That must be one heavy heavy frame!

The frame weighs a lot. It's pretty much a big BMX frame (made by GackBMX). It's got a really long steel seatpost. And beyond that, I have NO IDEA how I got it soo heavy. That stem is pretty hefty, and those bars weigh a ton... I dunno. When I first picked it up I just about tore my arm off cuz I was expecting it to be LIGHTER than my FS bike...

*Edit*: Oh yeah... MAKE THIS A STICKY!!!

indeed i do remember this...sorry but i think your picture does it no justice which is why it slipped my mind. still nice and hardcore. id much rather have a mr. than a s5. is the geometry on the pb corrected for 24 rear wheel? or is the head angle adjusted for dual 26s? does anyone know exactly what the head angle is running a 24 rear wheel?

The geometery is more then corrected for a 24" wheel, it's designed around it. With a 26" the BB gets REALLLLLY high, and you have even less tire clearance than a 24" - 1.9 is about it on a 26".

I'm not enough of a crack head to actually measure my headangle, but it's probably 69 or 70 degrees with the 4" fork, 24/26 setup.

Oh yeah...about the raw finished Marzocchi...

I don't have a camera, so no pics. For some reason the legs are grey and speckled up by the wipers but they, somewhat abruptly, turn silver below the brake bosses. Combined with my "Envy" arch, and mounted on a VERY rusted "raw" finished Brooklyn it looks really cool. The legs have oxidized as well, so my entire bike looks like it is a decade old.

It's actually not all that bad... I've lightened it up a LOT since the pic I posted, and the gearing is semi-easy (32-18 w/ 24" rear wheel)... It's definately awesome not having all that crap clanking around and waiting to be torn off back there...

I don't know which picture you are refering to. But mine is/was the clearcoated one I posted back a ways. The black one I posted, Steve tipped me off to - it was on MTBR. I just finished building this bike up for friend tonight. Pieced together on a budget so some of the parts wouldn't stand up to a lot of abuse, but she wanted the bike together as quickly as possible and doesn't have a lot of money to spend. Even so, it has taken three months to get to this day...

Azonic DS-1
Marzocchi Z-1 Wedge
Tank headset
Azonic bars
FSA Power-Pro cranks
Deore drivetrain
LX/Rhyno Lite wheels
DHRings.com guide
Avid Single-digit 3 brakes.

The bike went together reasonably well. The most annoying part was getting the DHrings chainring on the cranks as the tolerances were a bit off... but after quite a bit of file-work, it was persuaded to fit.
