thanks... yeah, as i get older, i gotta ride taller bikes-- i can still drop the seat and have plenty of clearance for whatever; but if I ride over about a mile in the lower position, my knees let me know about it for days and days (35 years of Skateboarding, bike riding, a few bad car wrecks and general dumbassness has my old knees constantly on the edge of quitting their job) , so i got the Large (18") frame...
No complaints so far; not much heavier than my dear old JackFlashRad at all and definitely a little more comfortable for me...
.. super well balanced... this is my do everything (as long as it's on pavement) city cruiser/whatever ride..

I gotta say that bike looks very good....but. Why do street-only bikes need disc brakes? They are in danger of being hit a lot, and concrete is the least forgiving thing I can think of hitting them with. Once again, nice bike.

why does one need full suspension or a dual crown to run airlines? maybe the guy races mtn x. Airlines means high chain tension and powerful/crisp short term shifting, not DH need only apply.

ok. so maybe he races MTN X... even then, for every other type of riding, it's quite a funny set up...

how many shifts do you get out of airlines before you need to re-load???

It's got a sweet raw/beadblasted steel finish, ghetto front derailleur stop (cortina forgot to give me one on the DT, but I have a clamp-on thingie coming), and is nearly clean of stickers... sorry Cortina, but they were heinous. Yeah, it looks funny to me in the pic, too...I generally set it flat when it's at full extension (Yup, I'm a weenie with a front derailleur) and I guess it just does that naturally when it's down... but it didn't look *quite* so wierd in real life.

ya i gotcha - i think we're just so used to seeing seats low & level or tilted up/back a bit... i have mine tilted back a bit because that's most comfortable for the position of my body when i'm seated... my weight is usually back & the seat is way low & out of the way.

are you giving the 4130 a whirl over the bmxtb or did you want to try something a little more xcish (??) or ...?

MikeD
09-04-2003, 11:17 PM
No, the BMXtb got mis-aligned by US Air in transit...rear end got kinda squished. Was originally told it was irreparable and I sure couldn't afford another BMXtb...then it turned out Frank the Welder could fix it [easily], which I had him do for about $50. Now i have 2 frames...gonna try this for a while and see how I like it, sell one sometime down the road.

Yeah, mine feel pretty stiff even with a soft spring, too.

There should be some oil on the legs; grease might indicate yours wasn't properly lubed at the facotry (I heard rumors some shipped with grease instead of oil).

MD

MisterMental

right
it isnt oil as such more like thin grease
there are oil rings on teh stanchions too but its getting less, i think its cause their just bedding in,
also their getitng faster the more i use them so they could just be freeing up

Nd4spd,

Thanks, the hubs are actually Phillwood not Woodman. I did use woodman pedals though ;-) The rims are Arrow DHX and I laced them 3 cross 36 spoke. The Brooklyn frame is 4130 and it is awesome. It is super stiff and has a good feel to it. I think that it might be a little small for a hardtail freeride bike but for some urban and park stuff it is just right.

gotcha - the wheels are cool; I just noticed right away that the tires are intense dh tires... known for being rather heavy.

if you're riding urban & djs, you might consider something a lil lighter w/ less tread... something along the lines of the arrow launch. but especially for djs, i prefer not to run dh tires as they tend to rip up the jumps more than a tire with less tread.

I had 321's with 2.7/2.5 maxxis tires... nice do it all type wheels.
If you're very smooth, you can do lighter tires and wheels, or you can get a set of light rhynolites (if you want to do a 24" rear) a set of mag 30's (heavier than 321's).
If you're gonna be doing drops over 4 feet, or big dirty jumps where you might be landing flat, either 321 if you want 26" or mag30 if you want 24"... if you're going to be doing smooth stuff, trials and shiat, 321's, 521's (if you want to go a bit lighter) or rhyno's. Well, that's what i would do anyways. Or maybe a set of arrow FR's if you can afford them (and are running tires under 2.5)...
i'd personally used 321's r rhyno/mag30 if i wanted to do the 24" route... personally.
i like that paint.

hey dump, what length is your stem, and why is 'so long'? what type of riding do you do on the Nicolai, street and dj only? does the longer stem have benefits? i'm running a 50mm on my Imperial and was considering going to a longer stem, but i don't know if it would give me what i'm looking for.

my stem is 75mm. if you consider that "so long," i think you need to put things into perspective :dea:

i ride everything w/ my bike... from street to dh. I have a longer stem to give me more room on the relatively short 21.5" tt ... i'm 5'11"

Hey Dump, your bike is schweet...Would you say that the majority of riding you do on it is urban even though you said it was a do-it-all?

Quick question, how much adjustment at the rear dropouts does it have? If you could measure the minimum and maximum chainstay lengths I'd appreciate it! Kona's website just lists them as the same as the other hardtails,16.7 inches

thanks,
Doug

I called Kona about this. They told me the shortest position is 16.7" with around 10mm of adjustment. Not exactly what I wanted to hear -- I was hoping the 16.7" measurement was somewhere in the middle.

Boo,Keepin' my Chute then!

But, Kona has trouble with measurements,my Chute is 1/4 inch longer in the toptube and way slacker headtube(like 3 degrees)
and my Dawg is only 14 inches at the seattube, not 15,so,let's actually measure one to see.
