Here is my current setup. It will soon be replaced by a new Subterranean frame, 24"trailpimps, PX SS bolt on disc hub and an avid mech rear disc brake (Most of the parts on this were temps borrowed from other bikes that now need to go back on)

I am almost finished turning the unfinished attic of our garage into a pimpass bike room. Too bad I spent so much money and time on the room, my bikes are all half built :monkey:

They are in fact miniature doors, for my pet midgets.

This photograph may help explain the situation! There is a staircase up here behind me.

yup - those were the first "hardcore" hardtails imo... i remember lusting over those in 94/95, but decided to go for lightweight steel instead ... in those days i was an xc-racer.

i have no idea what happend to them, i guess they just stopped making frames? i never got the impression that they ever caught on, their frames were marketed as primarily xc & trials frames... their xc frames were too heavy for the weight obsessed xc market & i dunno much about the trails market.

I think they were just starting to die as dh gained ground... they probably got the most exposure from those that read dirt rag & saw jay dejesus on his.

Site says 15 3/4" chainstay, 22.6" TT (large), 67 HA, as I remember.

I think the HA's like 68 in practice, the TT seems a tad shorter (measuring a hair over 22" horizontal), stay length is spot-on.

Thanks for the kind words! (It'll be even better once I get my next shipment of parts from this mailorder place... :D)

 Gasp! You support mail-order? Don’t you know your friendly local bike shop has everything you could ever need?

That geometery sounds fun! Very similer to the LeToy with the short rear end and slack head angle. I bet it rips on smooth DH courses. I'd love to try one out some day.

Friendly LSB has every thing yeah right who who kidding:confused: You even mention that you have talked to a online shop and watch them go nuts;)

Just for the record i'm not bashing any LSB's but there are times when you need a part or a "bike" because you are prepared so that you don't wait till April and say hey i need this now.

If i hear one more time "you won't be able to ride it now anyways" or my favorite "it's on backorder".My god don't they still ride bikes on the west coast or in the south during the winter on the east coast and don't suppliers still have parts to sell:confused:

Myself i have a deadline of the end of March to have everything ready for the season if not the 15th of March.I don't wait till the last minute for anything that i think i need;)

A few things happened to them.

First, I understand EWR was not the most financially stable company in the world and left quite a bit of debt in their wake.

Second, EWR's were welded by a Philadelphia builder called Grove Innovations and apparently the Original Woods Bike frame was a modified version of a frame Grove had already been building. I know a guy in Philly with one of the Groves and it's like an EWR on steriods. A few years ago Grove stopped building bike frames although I understand they will weld one up if enough money is waived in front of them.

Third, I know Jay DeJesus to some extent and Jay is a "free spirit" if there ever was one. It would be very much like him to start a project, have some fun with it, and then move on to something new.

I had a EWR Woods frame and it was a really cool bike. I had it built up with the parts on my Chameleon (search this thread) as a psuedo-DS bike. My main beefs with it were the really high bottom bracket with a 4" Z-1 and the extremely limited rear tire clearance (I had to run a 1.9) so I re-purchased my Chameleon and still have that now. I sold the EWR some months ago.

well urban so far but this thursday im going to see how it fairs on the trails. next year ill probly do the comfort DH race on it and i might take it with me to europe for the summer. cant really get a good close up. camera sucks. ill have to use a friends for any decent closeup shots. thats the only part that sucks about spending so much on bikes, there isnt any money for anything else!

Ok, here's my Nicolai again, now with some better parts on there...nothing too visible, but that's now a black evil bashring (more on that one later...), some Answer Protapers, new Rotovator discs, new dual Hope/521 wheelset with Maxxis 2.35 mobster SR/HR 60d combo, FSA V-drive cranks...lookin' pretty pimp and riding even better.

Bike is really slack, but turns fast thanks to the short rear end. Feels great on the trail, not bad on the street...I'm trying to learn how to really ride pavement with it. I'm pretty much still working on getting *good* at bunnyhopping, riding manuals for more than 2-3 seconds, trackstanding, and the rest of the basic skills, to be honest.

Frankly, after waiting so long, I'm a bit disappointed that it's got those stripes...just don't get why it's not solid black with a logo...

I think all black with a really small 'EVIL' near the edge would be sweet, maybe with the skull on there, too.

Maybe an orbital sander will take care of the 'problem...' if I get bored enough. What do you all think of it aesthetically?

(I don't really harp on this crap too much; I'm very happy with the guards in operation and am going to ride it without whining about it from now on; I was just suprised at the design for an 'urban' guard...it looks like Art Deco to me! Urban, yes, contemporary, no... :p )

You'll need to PM Nicolai-USA for the up-to-date info; the Euro vs Dollar fluctuations can change it...the Nicolai website has an estimate of $850 Euros.

Rabie, I really think I might do that, but it's not hugely important to me. Can't wait to get some riding in with you. (you should get one white Nicolai decal for your frame; it'd look striking against all the black. Put it on the top of the downtube or something... :p )

Yep. That means if your chain is rubbing on the derailleur cage at extreme crosschain situations (like 22/34t rear going up a steep-ass hill) you can click the derailleur cage over a hair to eliminate the rubbing. Or, when trying to shift under pressure, you can overshift a click or two to speed up the shift. It just gives you more adjustability than a trigger, which is all-or-nothing.

Thanks man, they're BRUTAL. I can just case the hell out of anything, at like 15psi, no worries about p-flats. Plus, it's like having rear suspension!

did a couple of runs on the evil @ bromont yesterday.

sweet! but damn am i out of shape. my legs were like jello (this was day 2 of our first DHing of the season).

the bike was a blast though, even though i soon retired it for my couch (giant DH).

one thing for evil owners - if you are gonna run a big tire on the rear (i had a 2.7" mobster), you probably wanna run it in the longest wheelbase position. i didn't feel like changing my housing/cable (too short) so i left it in the middle. it cleared the frame fine but buzzed on the chainguide plate every once in a while under hard pedaling or cornering.

peel the sticker off on the downtube. thats what i did with mine, and the bike looks MUCH better.

it peels right off. you may need a little solvent to get of a bit of sticky ****, but for the most part it comes right off.

I would feel bad riding one of those.......esp for street. DJ not so much, but i would still worry a lot. like, hit a jump, stop, wipe down w/rag, hit a jump, stop, wipe down, etc etc

This is how I plan to ride it :P

I am curiously easy on equipment... otherwise I could never see myself riding it.

Picked it up this evening... weeeeeeee!! I can't wait to build it up. One problem I found, is that I can't bring myself to put my old crud on it :P I am seeking lighter, more exotic (but still freeridish) components for it.. like Thomson stem and post, carbon riser, 2.35 single ply Maxxis, atomlab DHRs with King apple green hubs...

Dude, that bike deserves Mavic, not (*&#$@ Atomlab...get yourself some 521s or D3.1, or maybe the Arrow FR or Tiogas...!

What kind of cranks are you thinking? XTR DH cranks or RF Turbines might be the way to go...

Sweet, sweet frame! I think you oughta hang on to the Toy and singlespeed it/street-trials it out. I would if I had even the vaguest ability to handle a bike, which I don't.

And check your PM ;)

LostBoyScout
06-13-2003, 11:34 AM
haha.. the DHR's are nice rims! Those are the only Atomlabs I'd put on this guy. It's more likely I'd do dual Tioga DH's since I already have one.

I have polished Deore splined cranks I'll use for now.. XTR is what I'm thinking for the future though! Or maybe some RF's in that lime colour  :D

And yes.. the Le Toy with dual 24s (and Arrow Launches) and the DJ2 reduced to 80mm would be SWEET!!!! I'm dreaming now :D

Dang BAH...... so sick. You icepeep folk have swanky rides.

Thanks, actually I had them on top but it put my body in a funky position for riding actually. Because its my commuter and will be used for XC, thats a little too low in the front for me, my back starts to ache.

 I LOVE the candy apple green hub idea, jason. (this is durchhalten w/ the specialist from the 'tex btw.)

I'd be dead jealous if work on my new frame hadn't just begun. 6-8 nerve racking weeks and i should have her in my hands. I'm considering some unique build ideas as well, but they might have to wait until i clear some financial roadblocks. I'll post pics here as soon as i have something to photograph.
