Is that BMW stem really worth $100 or however much it is?? I'd really like one but that's a lot of money for something if I don't know if it's worth it. Also, do you have any pics of the whole bike? It looks like it's pretty sweet from what I can tell.

IMO the combination of 5" (or more) fork and a 24" rr wheel is just stupid. I'm getting so sick of seeing it. To each his own, but I'd bet money hardly any of those bikes are dedicated DH machines. No reason for an urban/DJ bike to be that slack. Penguins!

The man has a point! I do agree, and don't fully understand why people put a 26 in front...I run dual 24's and love it, simply for the strength advantage...and it's a bit better in the skatepark. But hey, let this not turn into one of those really long debates in here. Make a new thread if it does.

Not all of those bikes are used purely for urban riding and dirt jumping. You have to realize that just because it has cro-moly cranks, doesn't mean all they do on it is big drops to flat.
I think mainly your comment was sparked by that .243 pictured just above, probably because it's on a downhill slope, which, yes, makes it look like a very slack bike. It's not, really - about 68.5 degrees (not corrected for fork sag, say 69.5, 70.5 tops). That's not that bad at all, and in fact a little less slack than I would like for the kind of riding I do (no, it's not mine). Currently the only thing keeping a 26" wheel on the back of my ride is money. Simply, from what I've ridden, they're easier to manual with, easier to hop with, and generally easier to air with - doubtful any of these things could be considered a drawback. Even if it is just a street/dj bike, what's wrong with being able to bust a sweet hop-to-manual line just that much easier?
I'm not trying to flame you, just trying to say that a 24" wheel has many benifits for ALL types of riding, with the exception of some DH courses, and erm... fireroad DH. You can't lay the brand of lemming on someone just because they know something works, and works well.

100% agree on that. IMO, 24" just dont have anything to do with mountain bikes. If you can't manual or whatver with a 26", improve your riding! Change everything on your bike, but please keep the most basic parts of it: The wheels.

Warped...
I've only had the fork on for about a week now. Things took a bit longer at Risse than they had expected; not sure why. They were super easy to deal with the whole time though. When I placed the order I talked to them about what kind of riding I would be doing, let them know my weight and they took it from there. I believe they tune all their forks to a rider's specifics like Avalanche does.
Anyways, out of the box the first thing you notice is how beef this fork is(big stanchions and lowers, steel steertube, big bolts). The lowers and stanchions seem nearly as large as the Champ which was a massive fork. I ordered it anodized completely black, stanchions and lowers; definitely looks stealth. I think Risse will do just about any color you like. Poo brown was an option but I thought better of it.
The fork itself gets 4" of travel (I think 2-3" is an option), has 20mm thru axle, and weighs around 6 or 7 lbs. I guess one negative is that Risse uses a weird hub spacing so you sort of need to stick with their hubs. No big deal tho, they make a pretty nice one; 36 hole.
Tire clearance may be a problem for some if you're one to run big tires. The guys at Risse said the largest they've fit is a 2.7 Intense. Initially I wasn't able to fit the 2.65 Kujo dh that I had bought for the fork. There's plenty of width in the arch for a 2.7-2.8 but it would have to be a low profile tire like the Intense. The Kujos and Nokians, and Maxxis (I think) are taller and won't fit. You could get a new arch made if you really want to run huge tires I spose. I decided on 2.35 Kujos front and rear and so far they're awesome.
So far I've got nothing bad to say about how it rides. Yes, it is on the heavy side but if you're considering this fork you probably aren't too worried about that. However, I wasn't expecting the travel to be as smooth as it is since the Champ I had was so sticky. Might be different seals on this one. Rebound and compression are externally adjustable but I haven't messed with that yet, didn't get an owner's manual from Risse. Nothing special about the internals, just a plain old cartridge damper.
On the trail it rode really smooth tho. The faster i went the more responsive the fork seemed to get. This fork is plenty stiff. I tried to get it to flex and couldn't, take that how you will - I'm only 160 lbs. No big drops so far, just a little 3 footer. I found myself flying over sections a lot quicker than in the past. For me the fork gives me a bit more confidence in the rough stuff.
Any other questions just ask. If you're looking for a super solid 4" fork check this one out. I'm really enjoyin it so far.

Danchez... It's my only bike, so i have to make do. Urban and dj I drop it way down, but on the trails i like the leg extension.

My comments were sparked by 74 pages of silliness, not just one bike. Don't get me wrong, some of these bikes are straight up beautiful machines. Then again, some have been bastardized to no end. I've ridden dual 24's, 24/26, and now I'm back to dual 26's for good, so I've got experience with it all. I've done hucking, DS, DJ, DH, heck even trail/XC. A 24" wheel offers no benefit of any kind TO ME, for the various types of riding I do.
I can understand someone wanting a 24" wheel to make their bike *feel* quicker and snappier when hopping and manualing. But when you do it because you threw a 7" fork and 2.7-3.0 tires on both ends it's all relative. If you want a quick bike that jumps/manuals well then build it that way. Get one with short chainstays (which 24's DO NOT help on traditional vertical dropout frames, except for a few adjustable ones), steep head angle, 4"-5" fork, mid-weight wheels/tires, and build it with reasonable parts spec. Choosing a 24" wheel to make your 38-42 pound pig feel more lively is a bandaid. My 34 pound Evil takes all the abuse this 225 pound rider can dish out, without complaint.
In closing (because I won't debate this more in this very cool thread) my original statement did include the phrases "In my opinion" and "to each his own", and included an exception for those owners who ride their pig hardtails for DH (in which case I have the utmost respect for them). I just wanted to make the reasons behind my opinions known. Rest assured, my views were developed from experience, not heresay. I don't know how you can argue with that. Later.

i have a rear 24 on my bike to keep the chainstay length short. i would prefer a 26 but tire clearance is an issue. and i'm not running fatty tires either (2.1). i have no idea why i wrote this. geez i'm psycho. lough.

24" wheels make plenty of sense to me, But yeah the 26/24 combo I have never been a fan of. 3.0" tires are neat, but anything bigger than a 2.65 is an asthetic mod in my opinion.
These frames are made in australia, there were about 60 made in this batch, i think they qualify as burly hardtails.
this is one is my mats, the forks are mozo 5.5's

Thanks! We did a total redesign for 2003 and are very happy with the new Ridge.
A few of us are planing on going to the Red Bull event, I'll shoot you a PM today and maybe we can hook up for a ride afterwards.

Thanks again, we're currently gearing up for our 1st 2003 production run, which begins in October. So right now we've only got two 03 frames the orange one pictured above and a red one (which will be displayed at Interbike at the MRP booth). We haven't set the 03 colors as of yet, but I'm sure will be doing a black and most likely a gun metal as well. We'll be taking some intial deposits in the next few weeks, customers who get their deposits in before production starts will have a free custom color option. For more details check out www.sinisterbikes.com , we'll have all the details on the site in the next few days.

the lack of front brake indicates that its a dirt bike but it has DC forks to that cant be reet and its got a small chainring with a bashguard with gives teh impression that its a trials bike but that cant be right coz its not got a front brake

sorry to bash man...but you're pretty wrong...at least to that being a super small ring. That's pretty much a freeride standard on there...around a 32 or 34. So it's fine for jumping.

i really don't think that a steel hardtail of that beefocity would ever need a thru axel.
Lizard0fthetrai
09-12-2002, 04:32 PM
Danchez..maybe not, but just imagine how solid it would be, not just stiffness, but also, the wheelbase would be adjustable, and the possibility of wheel slippage (commonly associated with horizontal dropouts) would be deleted from the situation...someone make one! And then of course...put it up here.

i don't think a thru axel would help wheel slippage. let me think about it though. try bmx style chain tensioners. it would be cool to have conventional tensioners with integrated ones like on dragonfly bmx bikes or on some ftw frames.

For that steel 12mm idea, my Balfa minuteman has integrated tensioners. The thru axle would prevent slippage because the way thru axles bolt in, the dropouts are bolted in place...it's physically imposible to move it...unless you unscrewed or broke it

oh no, the weight isnt the problem, in my mind at least, i just think that any dual crown fork is impractical for jumping, you have very little ability to pump...and its very dificult to boost as high

.. that its personal preferance if you dont want to be abvle to do x-ups then fine but if u do tehn get SC forks
i for one prefere SC forks as you can get just as good SC forks as you can DC forks and for jumoing the max amount a travel you really need is 130mm and there are loadsa good SC forks that give that travel

Well with a Letoy I wouldn't worry about the headtube, those little frames take quite a bit of abuse. Unbreakable, no. Strong as an ox, long lasting, yes.
I was talking to a guy who put about an inch deep dent in the side of his downtube on his Letoy 3, they wouldn't warranty it so he's still riding it over 6 months later. Has had no problems.
Edit: The scary part is it doesn't even look raked out.:p

it is set up as more of a do everything bike this year. I can tell you I do alot of DJing and urban and the thing is great. I also been playing around on it at the DS course and took it out last weekend and also tried some downhill on it. I love the thing. I put 24"rims on it and the handleling (to me) is alot better than the 26's. But all and all I would definatley recomend it.

Here is the first incarnation of my new Stiffee FR. I say first cuz I'm sure I'll be doing a few mods in the near future. I built this up with parts I had from other frames, and that included the wheels (LX 36 spoke hubs/Sun Mammoth rims) and brakes (Magura HS-33). I just know I'll put discs on it in a while, but I can get my rocks off just fine until then with the "old school" parts spec!

I finally got used to the frame and I LOVE this bike, it's so tight and flicky, perfect urban/dj ride!!!
These things are pure beef. The steel equivalent of a LeToyIII...
And I mean EQUIVALENT... Nothing compares to this frame, not a Minuteman, PX Bommer, Gimp, NOTHING... This thing is soooo beefy...
I am sold on building one up just like this, except for rear only Avid mechanical on a gyro and with a new 03 DJ1...

Well I know it can take Michelin 2.5's but I am pretty sure that it can handle an Intense 2.7 which means that a 2.7 Maxxis will probably fit too.

Yeah I got a close look at his rig at the bike battle the other day. Friggin awesome. And it looks like hes running the new e-thirteen drs. Much smaller bashplate, prolly covers a 34-36 rather than the 40t size that comes standard. I cant wait to get a smaller bashguard on my drs when they come out this winter. I hear there may be a possibility of some different colors, too. Who wouldnt kill for a black evil one with white lettering. Sweet.
He was doing some nice stuff on that bike. I love the paint job as well.

Pinkdyke is really screwy now, i think they put in a filter.
Anywyas, that evil is a dream spec!
And about the azonic seat,
my friend bent his to sit (the rails) but the seat is very comfortable for a small one. it will go on my hardtail when i get it.

whoa! just noticed the STEM on that thing. GOOD LORD thats massive. whew!
Holy crap you guys actually know and spell my name correctly?! MUCH RESPECT! LOL!...
uhm, Ill post a pic of my bike just for the hell of it...
It's now a bit different, Azonic Hot Seat, new seatpost, 2.6" gazzys... runs very nice... Too bad I snapped my M arch and busted my shifter and am a poor broke student who can't afford to fix the thing till spring cuz Im blowing the rest of my money to go film fellow Ontario riders...
you'll find me on Dropmachine alot, but Im coming back to Ridemonkey more lately because it has one of the best and most mature rider crowds and discussions...
This thread rocks btw... and everyone check out the pics I put up of my buddies .243... I will own one like that next year I hope. Such a sweet urban tech ride!

Holy ****!!!! 82 pages in this thread!?!?! That is INSANE! No wonder I couldn't find the pics I posted before.... Im gonna post the pics of this .243 again cuz it's such an awesome bike once you get to know it... so flicky, yet so tough...
This bike is a .243 proto, BMX BB, singlespeed Spot hub, MacNeil integrated bashguard/ring, 38t, with 16cog, Profiles, Kooka stem (off my Minuteman) and my seatpost and Azonic hot seat off my Minuteman, Azonic Ultra Cross bar, ODI lockons... Sun Doubletracks with 2.6 gazzys... I can't say enough about this bike... It's no big hucker, but it's a tech street bike that can sure take a beating...

'98 Mr T's had two piece stanchions which allowed you to take off the upper crown and run them as single crown forks. If you look closely at the pic, the crown looks a little thinner then your typical Marzocchi single crown.

Sorry for multiple posting but the truth has to be told!
Numero uno: Not that I can't afford outer cable, the fact is my previous ones were too short due to the gimp have no cable stops down seat stays and my LBS is too far for me to pop down and get some.
2. I can setup gears perfectly well.
3. I agree, front tyre is absoultely crap cant wait to change it to a high roller 2.35 i have already swapped rear, What tyres do you have Adam?
4. The front brake is fine, i am getting a front c2. I you had it and it was crap maybe you cant setup brakes properly... have a think on that. :D
