I always do think the Chase bikes look pretty sweet, but personally I don't think I would trust a lefty on a dj/fr bike, although if I stuck to dj and xc and was really smooth.......

The Jackal rides very nicely. I have only just recieved my my new 26" wheels so it's not been thoroughly thrashed off road yet but from messing around on it and jumping it fells really good.
Oh and I like the way it rides with the headset spacers there thankyou very much wydopen.

that polished p3, is it just polished or polished then laquered as on top?
Polished only and yes its a pain in the arss to keep it that way but that is what I do for a living (polishing that is) so I like to represent.
The P3 was just retired and replaced by a new 12" Iron horse Porter.
The paint will come off and it will be bling blinging soon.

Care to publish a tutorial. Thats mean!
Uncle Jimmi

Care to publish a tutorial. Thats mean!
It takes years of experience if polishing machines or equipment is used or you will more than likely hurt yourself or your frame. This includes the use of dremel tools, drills, and grinders, ECT…
However it can be done at home safely.
First the paint must be removed, I recommend using aircraft striper brand spray or liquid brush-on.
Then hand sand using 200 grit wet-or-dry paper with a little water.
Then repeat the process with 300, 500, 1000, 1500 grit, the finer you go the brighter the buff will be.
Now you can use a rag and aluminum cream polish such as Mothers or Flitts, NOT never-Dull
It takes lots of time and scrubbing but will look good if you are thorough with each step.
I have seen many ruined projects as a result misused equipment or tools even in the hands of otherwise skilled craftsman, so stick to the plan or pay a pro.
If you give it a try report back and let us know how it went.

Nice job. Have you considered polishing the cranks?

12-07-2005, 06:07 PM
Nice job. Have you considered polishing the cranks?
Yes, and the bars and the seat post and more of the rims (did you notice the 1/4 inch strip between the tire and rim) But I think it hit the perfect ballance of black and silver.

12-17-2005, 07:02 AM
The polishing is dope. I've spent a lot of time polishing various bits of metal over the years, so I appreciate the time and effort that must have taken. Just out of interest, have you weighed a frame before paint striping and after polishing?

that frame will be pretty long for you,
try and test ride a few bikes and take note of the TT lengths of the ones you like
personally i like small TT, i am 5'10" and ride smalls (see sig for bikes) i would guess you want something around a 21-21.5" actuall or 22-22.5" effective TT unless your goin for more of a trail bike. if you look back a page our 2 you'll see my HT it has about a 21.8" actuall tt and is great for jumping, short for trail riding. but like i said i like short bikes.

The dark blue or the ice blue? I knew they had some ice blue ones go out, didn't see any eBay auctions for the trans blue ones (it's almost black if you don't have light shining through it).

I've had a few hardtails in the past and somehow always ended up parting them for fullies, but almost immediately regretted it! hardtails are so much fun, what are you building up? DC can be fun to ride hardtails when not too many ppl are holding protests.

i use to have a morphine with almost that exact same setup though i had a 24" in the back. its a really good bike but i always had a problem with the rear wheel moving back toward the end of the dropout on the disc side. you have to have a bolt on rear hub to run 8" rotors on it. that actually ended up being one of the reason i sold the bike. now i regret that desicion and now i'm building anther FR hardtail

Mlody, how's the Boxxer working for you on that bike? I'm going to keep riding my bike as-is for a while, but I'm thinking about putting a Boxxer on, since one of the 7" pre-2004(?) ones would give me another inch of travel while only raising the front end by about 6mm.

It worked nice, I used that bike for DH and I liked how it rode. Front end felt good, it wasn't too high. I had that bike for a couple of months (in 2005) before I bought fully.

Definitely FR only it would seem with that Free Radical. Pretty slack! But also pretty cool and very burly!

As far as I know, it's the only one in the world at the moment. That one is a pre-production proto from a couple of years ago. He's just now getting a batch built. Won't be exactly the same -- it'll be better!
I raced DH on this bike all season in the Mountain States Cup with either a Marz 66 or a Boxxer Team on it. It rocks for a hardtail!

The build above weighed in at 36lbs. Rode one 90km XC ride and decided to shed some pounds.
Put a Pike426 dual air u-turn, changed the rubber, new saddle, that alone saved close to 5 lbs.

New (well, a couple months old) ti hardtail. Built around a Pike give me a 68deg HA. Built beefy enough for a 160mm to slack it up a bit to 67. Been riding it mostly with the Pike, but have recently tossed a Nixon Elite 160mm that I picked up cheaply on.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f12/scrublover/bike%20shots/gonzo.jpg
I'll ride it that way a bit and see which fork/headangle setup I prefer. If taller, I'd rather something like a Lyrik Solo-Air, but the Nixon was cheap, and so far it's working well. The Lyrik would just be nice to have it be stiffer, and a pound lighter than the Nixon.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f12/scrublover/bike%20shots/067.jpg
15" seattube, 22.5" toptube. 13" bb with the Nixon on. Frame is a 4.25# and feels really good - tough enough for what I do on a bike. A near carbon copy of my steel Peyto frame - just a 1/2" longer in the toptube.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f12/scrublover/bike%20shots/roomy.jpg
2.6" Kenda with room to spare. 38mm dia. top and down tubes, 31.8mm seat tube. 19mm seatstays, 22mm chainstays. Disc side stay bracing. Insert into the seat tube up top to bring the post size to 27.2mm and reinforce the area. 0.9mm tubing with the down tube and chainstays bumped up to 1.2mm thickness.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f12/scrublover/bike%20shots/head.jpg
Top and bottom lap gussets with rings top and bottom as well. Zip tie cable guides throughout, a stop for a front derailleur if I decide to run one, and a chain hanger. Because I like them, and because I could.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f12/scrublover/bike%20shots/hanger.jpg
Chinese ti by XACD, though Gene Spicer acted as middle man/pimp to make sure things went smoothly. Cheaper than domestic, but I still gave money to a domestic builder that way.

Sliding Rohloff compatable slider dropouts in case that temptation strikes, or to go SS.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f12/scrublover/bike%20shots/spicer20cycles2018391.jpg
For the short time I've had it, it's been a fun ride. It's probably going to see the majority of my ride time.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f12/scrublover/bike%20shots/065.jpg
It's and awesome little trialsy trailbike that can do a little bit of everything, and well, at least for me. I'ts not a huge hucking bike, but that isn't the type of rider I am either. Tight, twisty, rooty, rocky, steep and technical is my thing, and this bike so far is rocking on that stuff. It's really groovy on slow speed technical stuff.
winter modem converted to solid rear axle. if i get used to it I may just run it this way year round with a front brake thrown on.
