I am going to help my friend with his bmx bike that hasn't been ridden in a long time. For bikes blue or red threadlock? For the headset bearings, can I use axel grease?

Blue unless you never want to get it off

Yes on the grease -- just make sure to clean the old stuff off really well.

Nothing on a bike except maybe brake rotor bolts needs to be loctited. Just use a little grease on the bolts and any other metal-to-metal contact ie seatpost and bearings.

The grease is cool as long as it's water resistant, and like the post above says use the BLUE loctite only if you have a problem with things coming apart. Otherwise grease works fine on all the bolts.

Blue if you ever need to remove, red if you never plan on removing. I would say you'll never need red on a bike. Use blue only if you are having a problem with something repeatedly coming loose.

A while ago in my traxxas rustler r/c car, my hinge pin that held the front a-arm (control arm) (made of plastic) to the chasis kept coming loose. SO my friend put red threadlock around the hing pin. I din't come loose again. A few weeks later I needed to the the a-arm off. It took about an our of puting paint or lacker thinner in it and lossening it to get it out. Then I had to drill the peices of threadloc out of the a-arm with more thinner.

I typically loc-tite all the bolts on my bike (especially shock mounts/pivots, etc), with loc-tite. Can't hurt.

Keep it blue baby.
