how do i get my front chainrings off the splined bottom bracket? do i need a gear puller or something?

It's called a crank puller. Get the money metal Park one: CCP-4. The Shimano
TL-FC10 is good too, but needs a separate wrench to operate.

Most guys will cringe when they read your post. Good job of thinking outside the box. I own an crank puller already....just be sure to not mess teh threaded part so in the future if you get a crank puller ($10-20) it can still be used.

They are handy....I have the old Park square taper tool and the center peice ends up going inside the BB bolt hole....all I need are a couple dimes or pennies and then the tool works for the new splined BB too. No need for another crank puller. I have munched 2 dimes all teh rest have stayed perfect...... No need to get a new one for me.

Did teh arms mess up the crank arms while they were tugging at it?
