Damn, I have multiple reasons to post in this thread!!
1. I started racing right there, at the Killer 3, way back in 1993, and it's still one of my favorite xc loops ever. The last 2 seasons Buddy had the races there i think I won 3 out of the 5. Eric Lemaire still has the course record as far as I can remember, set listening to his walkman and making us all look silly.

2. I just converted my old Spooky to an SS with an Eno hub. I threw on a karate monkey fork and a light- ass road wheel wrapped up in a motoraptor 2.1 for good measure. It ****ing rules. Would definetly be more fun somewhere besides western ma. Our ultra straight up/down riding and ultra rocks make it more challenging, but on some more Southeastern terrain the SS with the big front is more fun than nitrous.

Now that's something you don't see every day. Assuming the filename is descriptive, how'd you wind up with that?

Edit: And a pic for SuspectDevice. K3 is my regular rainy day ride and about the only place around where I miss gears. Particularly the big ring.

I could of swore the file name was "http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=69284&stc=1&thumb=1". But if you must know, it's by a one man east coast builder, with two different color eyes and some of the best welds in the business. I am not sure if we are thinking of the same builder?

If we are, I will share the long story on how I got the bike. :thumb:

yep 05. I took it out saturday morning for a 3.5hr ride. I really don't have anything to compare it to since I've been a fs rider for about 6 years. So running rigid is a whole different experience.

It wasn't as harsh as I thought. It did feel like riding a wild bull down some of the techie descents.

The fork (kona p2 disc only) dropouts weren't even so I had to sand away on one side so the wheel sat in there straight. The ft disc brake tabs need to be faced because clamping down the ft wheel causes the caliper to move slightly making the pad a lil crooked.

The rear tabs also need facing. Not sure if the frame or rear hub is outta spec, but there's not much I can do to fix the brake rub until then. I guess I can toss in another wheel to see if it is the frame.

The wheelset came out pretty good. I built it up with a paul word disc qr rear and a Real front. Wheelsmith 2.0/1.7 spokes alloy nip on dt disc rims. Those are the nicest rims I've ever built with.

pffft. screw tensioners and so on. if you're gonna' spend the $$ to have the frame converted, just have a wheel built instead.....

thanks; it's a great frame, and i'm extremely happy with it. though i have to be careful-it's NOT up to the same abuse my other bike is, so i have to remind myself of that sometimes when i want to hit something on it. if i did another, i'd have more tire room, and a slightly gussetted headtube added. it's what i use for a lot of my long/high rides, and any racing i get the urge to do. 22 pounds with the sussy fork, about 20.5 when i run it rigid. 32x20 gear for me here in colorado. lets me do some high up climbing rides a lower gear wouldn't allow.

except i had to spread/crimp the rear chainstays to give bit more tire room. i can get a 2.3" now, depending on maker. running 2.25 IRC trailbear now. ionic (same as DEAN- dean are the ti frames/ionic are the steel frames out of their factory) wouldn't help me out there, so i did it myself. carefully. it's steel, so should be fine..........

Here is my Soul Cycles Hardline although it has evolved since this pic with a 2003 Z-1 and some Crossroc tubless wheels. I am planning on adding to the single speed collection in the next few months and building up something really light to race and converting this one to rigid to take to the bmx track

nice! love the brushed/shiny/silver finish! paint, or is it just brushed and shined up?

It was just brushed and had a coating of stuff on in. It was pretty much prepped for paint. About a month or so after I had it I found that one of the weld beads on the ht gussest was cracked probably from not cooling right or something. Even though it was nothing structural, the guys at Soul were super helpful and replaced the frame with a chocolate colored one. I have to give them an A+ for excellent customer service.

As it turns out, I think things worked out better this way since it was looking like that raw finish was going to take a lot of work to maintain.

pffft. screw tensioners and so on. if you're gonna' spend the $$ to have the frame converted, just have a wheel built instead.....

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/white-hubs.html

i'm using one of these on a vert drop road frame as my road fixie. works wonderfully well! no slippage at all, even with fixed gear backpedalling.

oh yeah; edited to add: three of my five bikes are SS, and two of those three are fixed. pics forthcoming in a day or two.
I wondered how well those hubs held. I don't want to be an expensive experiment.

check over at ww.mtbr.com on the SS board. lots of use of these hubs over there, with alot of good info.

alot of folks seem to have had great success with them; i know mine has been great. i'd have no problems using one offroad, based on how well it's worked on my fixed gear.

I've got a circa 1992ish diamondback axis that i'm setting up (again) as my commuter/CX bike. mountainbike frame and rigid fork, 700c wheels, caliper brakes, 16t bmx freewheel and a 38t ring. i put 42mm wide CX tires on it when it had gears and it was an awesome XC bike, i cant wait to get my hands on a chain tentioner. i also just got a set of FSA x-drives for my soul cycles hardline.

zahgurim
05-28-2005, 10:49 PM
MMcG The fork is a DNM, good for 120mm.

DNM doesn't make this one anymore, and my shop picked a few up on clearance. They tossed me this one to test out for them, and I'm actually pretty surprised at it.
It has taken quite a beating and has held up ok for being a cheapish fork. Although the bushings crapped out on it fairly fast and it developed a bit of play, it hasn't gotten any worse and going through the travel still feels pretty good.
I'll toss it onto the frame I'm building for my girl, she won't kill it.

Yep, just joined the single speed club. I couldnt be ****ed taking my cassette apart so i just left it on there and took the derailer off. I have been warned about possible dangers from that but with the tension that i have managed to get, i doubt that chain is going anywhere. But yeah, took it for a little spin today, loved it. Ill put some pics up soon i hope.

Single speed looks as if its going to last me a while. No more annoying chainslap, loose chains, derailer breaking etc. :D

This is my Surly Karate Monkey which has some decent parts on it - Mean Todd @ Webcyclery did this for me and the pre-sale support was really, really great.

After only a few months of single speeding, I've learned the following:

1 - I can climb much better on a SS than I'd ever, ever anticipated
2 - I have enjoyed this sport for several years, but now I'm enjoying it even more - gears, schmears!

Interloc Racing Design steel frame/Reynolds Ouzo Pro carbon fork combo, converted to fixed with the White Bros. ENO eccentric rear wheel. Hugi 240 front. USE carbon post, Titec ti stem and Salsa bar (yep, chopped-i ride on the hoods most of the time, bar tops the rest). Cane Creek levers, generic front brake. Stronglight crank, Race Face Taperlock ti BB, Mag/Ti Wellog pedals. Generic ti rail seat. Cane Creek Solos headset. with a few ti and alu goodies, it's abit over 16# now; could go lighter, but not without tossing boatloads more cash. 48x18 setup gets me 70 gear inches, with the cranks/tires and so on.

On-One il Pompino fixed/free crosser/commuter/grocery bike. Steel straight blade fork. 38mm Tioga Bloodhound tires. Allen bolt QRs.
Surly wheelset converted to QR. King headset, Am. Classic ti post, Ti Cycles ti stem, Titec Malone bar. Cane Creek levers pulling cheapie Shimano v-brakes. Wellgo ti pedals, World Class ti BB, Cook Bros. crank. Generic ti rail seat. 38x15/18 fixed/free. More ti and alu goodies here and there; this one is about 2# heavier than the roadie. Sigh. Though that isn't counting the fenders and rear rack that are on her now.

change that, i found a 34 tooth compact for a roadi 5 arm 110cm that fits my old xt box stock crank from 1988...

so i am now using the 36 tooth as a chain guard / log climbing teeth grabber and note this shadow chain is nuts... i broke two chain tools on it.. resorted to a plier to use as a platform and held a nail punch over a pin to get the dang thing started... freakin tough chain.. i should get this out to ride monday noon on devils backbone... http://www.rm-mi.net/images/shadowChainSingle34.JPG

Rode it for the 1st time today. It was a mess when i got it-I just stripped it down straight away without a single ride.
Took it too the local BMX track, its really whippy, short and low. The tiogas are quite light for a 2.3" but gripped better than expected-I ended up spinning out 32-16 quite easily might drop to 32-14 (the hubs came with 14,15,16,&18T sprockets). Easily to speed jump stuff, jumping doubles was a bit harder as Im used to a DH bike and using the rebound to launch me.

Rides very much like a 20" BMX but you have the rolling advantage of 26" wheels.

Nice little bike Im glad I spent the time & effort in rebuilding it.

Single speeds are worthless they are for people that arent good enought to be competative in racing with gears so they switch to single speeds, ohh and fixed how much more worthless can it get, its the biggest fad ever every day i see emo kid wearing tight pants riding fixed gears. They can hardley ride a bike, although watching them crash is quite fun. Ohhh and why is everyone with singlespeeds always so pissed off? maybe its because their bikes only have one gear.

If you hate them so much why would you even come into a forum named Singlespeeds?

No one's asking you to like them, but I'm telling you now not to come in here just to flame them.

Jeje, it's a well used and abused cog; I'm using Endless on mine and it was laying on my parts bin asking for more punishment.

Probably the reason for his account being deleted in the first place.

Thanks,

Actually the think I'm most proud of is the Fork. It's an old 1997 Rock Shox DH (for Down Hill). The elastomers were pretty much frozen. I ordered a NOS spring kit for a 1998 Judy on ebay. I took the shock apart and overhauled everything, I got rid of the rubber boots, I painted the lowers black and trimmed the decals down. The fork now is better than it ever was, and it actually looks good.

White Industries cranks BG? Looks like its ready for some baby heads here in Rothrock. All of the trails from the SSWC05 are now open again, after logging and the fire. The trees burned but the rocks didn't.

Yup, I have no love for splined cranks.

Glad to hear the fire didn't cause the rocks to form a lava-flow to wipe out Boalsburg. :) I'm looking forward to riding there again. PM me your number and I'll give you a call next time I'm the area.
