Well I sold my Belair frame and I acquired some Mavic 317 wheels recently - so I'm getting ready to build up a more XC/Endurance riding type of full suspension bike.

And I'm looking for ideas.

So.............show me whatcha got! Pics and specs and weight would be killer.

Thanks!

Mark

No pics, but I picked up that free Specialized FSR the other day. It needs work. The fork is so stiff it might as well be rigid, the shock is really squishy, the cables are all stretched out, the cranks, BB, and rings are shot. :dead: I'm looking forward to working on it though. I've never worked on a FS bike.

Why the switch to the romic? and how much do you think your bike weighs? Is it the 5" version of the Hollowpoint?

22-24lb Titus Loco Moto, sorry no pics right now. Build has changed a bit over the years (I've had this frame for 3 seasons) but here is how it sits right now.

'02 X-Large frame with Float RL
'04 Vanilla RL
Martas with Stan's aluminum rotors (1 wavy prototype)
Thomson stem and post
Monkeylite riser (not SL)
SRAM XO shifters and rear derailleur
WTB Laser V Stealth w/ti rails
King Headset
FRM ISIS bottom bracket with custom double bearing driveside setup
Truvativ Stylo Team cranks
Time ATAC Carbon with Stan's kit (ti axle, ti springs, and aluminum pins)
Foam grips
Hutchison Mosquito Golds (2.0) or Kenda Karmas
One of the following wheelsets - ZTR355/Hugi 240s, ZTR Olympic/Hugi 240s, 317/Hugi 240 - may build some special Olympic rims to some King hubs this winter, all sets running tubeless

Sure did, but I have access to a lot of non-production lighweight parts that I test for Stan. If I had to pay full price ... I wouldn't.

Racer X 100 would be my 1st choice if I did any racing at all.

You know mine... Yeti 575. Complete buildup is on my website, let me know if you have any questions. And yes, there are a few things I would do differently now that I've ridden it for a while.

The biggest thing is that I'd put less money into the shifters/derailleurs. I bought into all the XO hype. It's a good der, but for me, XT stuff would have been fine, and that would have freed up $100 or so for better cranks.

The only thing I've changed since this pic was taken is that I've tossed the Maxxis Larson TT's for some tires that actually work for XC - Panaracer Fire XC 2.1's.

Build:

Fork: FOX TALAS RLC
Rear shock: FOX RP3
Headset: CANE CREEK S-2
Bottom Bracket: INTEGRATED W/ TRUVATIV CRANK
Crankset: TRUVATIV STYLO SL 42X32X22
Front Der: SHIMANO XT
Rear Der: SHIMANO XT SGS
Shifters: SHIMANO LX
Cassette: SRAM 7.0 11X32
Chain: SHIMANO HG-93
Hubs F-R: ARC-YETI / SHIMANO 525
Rims: MAVIC XM 317
Tires: PANARACER FIRE XC 2.1
Brakes/Levers: HAYES HFX-9 XC - 6"
Handlebar: TRUVATIV TEAM CARBON RISER
Stem: TRUVATIV TEAM 3-D (100MM)
Grips: YETI HARD CORE
Saddle: YETI / WTB ROCKET V cro-mo
Seatpost: TRUVATIV TEAM (27.2MM)

I did not choose any of these components except the Talas and the tires. This was the stock "Enduro Disc" setup provided directly from Yeti.

Not EXACTLY sure of the weight. Bike weighted 29.8 lbs when I wheeled it out the door. Lost around 2.3 lbs when I switched tires, so that would put it right about 27.5 lbs.

Holy Moly that is one light Loco-Moto build!!

Mike B are you looking at the new Motolites now??

Yeah, Mark I'm looking at the Motolite - I think I pm'ed my demo days review to you at some point. The first 2 production runs are already sold out to dealers and individuals so it will now be at least March/April time frame until they have any for sale again. I really like the bike but I want mine anodized, not powdercoat which is my only hang up about it.

When you see that weight, keep in mind I've got some Olympic rims that are 287g each - for testings sake, and if you pick through the pile, you can find Karmas that weight 420-420 grams. Also, a prototype wavy aluminum rotor in a 160mm weighs < 50g. I'm not a weight weenie myself but Stan is and I benefit from it. Keep in mind, I'm 175lb without riding gear and I haven't broken anything yet. If I started breaking stuff I'd ditch the lightweight goods in a second.

No problem Tim - what kind of fork is it?

It's a Manitou, not sure of the model. It has a sticker that reads "Pro" and another with the Specialized logo with "LT" under it, then "Long Travel" under that. Was the "Pro" an old Manitou model?

I actually got it functioning last night. The previous user had one of the knobs on top at the extreme "+" side, and the other knob all the way to the "-" side. I'm not sure which knob is which yet, but I centered them and the fork got a more responsive. I won't know if it's usable until I get a chance to take it apart. There is some hard gunk around the one top-cap that looks like it leaked out then hardened.

*edit* I just Googled it, and found that the Pro is an old Manitou model. "Long Travel" in this case means 80mm :rolleyes:

Specs and weight?

It's a medium frame with full 756 XT kit besides the deore discs and the XTR rear derailleur. I'm planing on putting on some XT discs and some tubeless wheels in the near future . The bike, with some WTB XC 2.1 tires, came out to be about 29 lbs. I'm guessing it weighs about 31 with these fatty Kenda tires.

It's a 2003. The 2004's have a few changes. They reconfigured part of the rear triangle for more tire clearance.

When I test rode one the delay was noticable. It was fairly harsh on until it "opened" then it was pretty decent. The thing I really didn't like about the Epic was the low BB. I was whacking things left and right on the ride.

This bike is what I built up with spare parts from my old Trek Y-Frames. I bought the 2003 Sugar 4+ frame off eBay for $225.00 and was able to transfer everything over except for the front derailleur and bottom bracket. My old RaceFace (circa 1997) Turbine LP square taper cranks had seen better days so I retired them and went with LX. All told the bike weighs 29 LBS with the Kendas, my winter tires are Continental Vertical Pros and they will push the bike over 30 LBS.

This is a poor picture of my burner. It's a mix of different parts that I've accumulated over the past couple years with a 5" vanilla rlc up front. It's a MUCH better ride than the AC I had these parts on before. Hopefully the pic comes out okay enough.

Yup Helius CC with Horst link. The Rock Shox shock has been pretty good. Surprisingly durable and an adequate performer. I like the Mav tuned Psylo - no problems there either.

Nice ride Ridemonkey!! Hey when were those Maverick Tuned Psylos produced? Were they made for their ML7s to serve as complete bikes before they had their Maverick DC forks ready for production ??

Yeah they made them in 2002 I think. They had some extras that ended up in a shop in Boulder.

if so the bike shop thats down the street from me has sold quite a few steel and Ti road and mtb Kish frames and they have gotten great reviews.

Steel and Ti aint my bag but the quality of workmanship is excellent on these bikes

That's cool. What kind of price did you get on it? $450 seems to be the MSRP - are there better deals to be had though? I really like the step up from that frame... it's an aluminum race frame, but the MSRP is $600. Probably going to be a while before I can afford that.

Great price but after getting on a couple of FS bikes and a couple of hardtails last night I'm back on the FS kick!

good thing! I trully beleive taht you will be happier with a FS.

a ht is fun but hard on the body on long runs...I also think that after a while you are gonna find that your cheetah is way to heavy and slow for xc/trail even with light parts!

the best thing is to have both...a HT and a FS...

personnaly, i can't seem to be able to have lesss than 3 bikes at the time! one freeride/dh fs, one xc/trail FS, and a HT!

I've got an Intense Spider. Built up weighing 23.4 pounds(on three DIFFERENT scales)for pure XC racing. Were talkin' SID world cup fork, American Classic wheels with Sapim CX Ray bladed spokes, Hayes Mag Plus disk brakes, and triple ti egg beaters. You can pretty much guess what else there is, considering the weight, or lack-there-of. Oh yeah, NO SHIMANO. none. yee haw!

Wow Donnie that thing is super nice! What are your impressions of it so far? I went for a good ride on mine yesterday and it felt great. Very efficient! What fork do you have on it now, and how do you like the 5th element air. I have a Fox Float AVA and I'm wondering how the two shocks compare in terms of ride quality.

Again, great looking Hollowpoint!

BMXman
02-15-2005, 08:45 AM
I like the 5th air is really easy to set up and rides smooth...feels more like a coil shock after the first 1/2 " of travel. The fork is an '05 All mountian air....so nice and plush....the spinergy wheelset is so light I felt a big difference in acceleration right away....D

MMcG

Is that All Mountain Air the SL model? 150-130mm of travel? Does it make the front end feel too raked out? Doesn't seem to look like it does. How do you have it set up while out on the trail? Do you primarily ride it in the 130mm travel setting and then throw it into 150mm mode for descents?

Anymore I see little weight diff between 80 and 100 and with an air fork you can set up a 100 to act like an 80 if you don't want the extra dive/bob so I soo no point in the 80 any more.

Just to say hi. I live in the Uk, South Wales.

Haven't seen many Commencal's on this forum - are they sold in the States?

Nope.

Two of the three greatest things I ever got from California - my Turner, and a case o' Fat Tire! (The third is my fiance!) Specs are...

2004 Black Turner Burner with Swinger 3-Way (anyone got a 6.5 x 1.5 RP3 for sale?! :)) and...

* Fork: RS Reba Team U-Turn with the poploc doodad
* Brakes: Hope Mono Minis
* Cranks: Race Face Turbine LPs (Love these things!)
* Headset: CK (Not Calvin Klein, the other CK)
* Shifters: SRAM X.9
* Front Derailleur: SRAM XGen
* Rear Derailleur: SRAM X.0
* Pedals: Crank Bros Candy SLs
* Stem: Thomson Elite
* Handlebar: Monkey Lite XC carbon, with Odi Lock Ons and Cane Creek Ergo bar ends
* Seatpost: Thomson Elite
* Saddle: WTB Devo Ti
* Wheels: Velocity VXC rims laced to DT Hugi 240s with Airborne 6-4 skewers

Weight's about 25.5lbs, with pedals, give or take a couple of ounces. (I had to adopt the home weight method approach of weighing myself, then weighing myself holding the bike, and working out the difference!)

Pretty much a stock 04 Jamis Dakar XC Comp. I added a 05 minute 3 with 130mm travel, but thats really about it. She's alittle dirty. Oh and the fender, it's saved my eyeballs on many occasions. With out it even with my usual riding glasses on I use to get everything in my eyes. So wet and muddy rides it goes on, but usually it is off.

JAMIS DAKAR - either the XLT series or the XC series
i have the XLT and it is AWSOME. there really no noticable pedal bob. there is 5" of travel in the rear. it soaks up the little stuff and the large stuff. you can use it for everything but it still performs perfectly for xc. if you want a good bike buy this one.

I have to re-post my ride since I had a tragic Loctite/Goof-off incident. The 575 is now "stealth":

You ended up running the short stem? :think:

I did, and I love it. Feels so nice with that length stem on it, and doesn't adversely affect handling or climbing, at least that I can feel.
